Money Mouse is OG Slick’s parody instinct at full strength: Mickey Mouse recast as Guan Yin, the thousand-hand goddess of compassion, showered in gold coins. The hands cover the eyes, a willful blindness to the lie, while an “X” behind the back signals he is in on the deception. It is a piece about fortune and what people will overlook to chase it.
The artist put its origin plainly: “As a child, I remember seeing figurines at the register of stores in Chinatown covered in money. My mother explained to me that it was to bring good fortune to the shop owner and to whoever left the money there. Money Mouse depicts one of the most iconic characters from my childhood as the Guan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion, being showered with gold coins, bringing good fortune to the highest bidder.”
The sculpture is cast copper and brass under electroplated, polished gold chrome, the same process and material as COHERE, so the whole surface reads as solid gold under light. It was produced in two editioned sizes: a two-foot edition of five, and a single unique four-foot piece, since acquired into a private collection in Shanghai.
The work and its meaning are OG Slick’s. Curative helped bring the object into the world, producing the sculpture and its editions in collaboration with the artist and Longmen Art Projects: the casting, the plating, and the finished editions. The same foundry relationship the artists wing is built on, at the scale of a collectible rather than a monument.
