David Flores’ largest mural program anywhere: five works across more than ten thousand square feet on the sky terrace of MixC Jinan, anchored by a monumental sculpture. Curative secured the commission and produced it across two continents.
MixC Jinan is a flagship mall in the capital of Shandong province, and its sixth-floor sky terrace became, for a season, a walk-through gallery of David Flores. Five murals covered more than ten thousand square feet, anchored by a monumental sculpture. It was the largest single gathering of Flores murals anywhere, the culmination of close to a year of work.
Flores’ language is instantly legible at distance: bold black line, flat planes of color, faces reduced to their strongest strokes. At this scale it turns architecture into portraiture. Across the terrace the murals read as one continuous body of work rather than five separate walls, with the sculpture giving the program a center of gravity.
This is the same model as Curative's Xin Tian Di takeovers: Curative owned the room. One of its relationships opened the door in Jinan, and Curative brought David Flores to fill it, then produced the whole program across two continents. The work that never shows up in a photograph is the work here, securing the opportunity, the cross-border business between a Los Angeles artist and a Chinese property group, coordinating the painting and fabrication with local vendors, and moving the artist and team to the ground for the install.
