David Flores × Xin Tian Di

The first of two consecutive New Year takeovers Curative brought to Xin Tian Di: David Flores’ five-meter Tomodachi and a mall-wide program for the Year of the Dog, 2018. Curative secured the deal and produced it across two continents.

The first year

Before OG Slick’s Year of the Pig, there was the Year of the Dog. In 2018, Shui On Land’s Xin Tian Di district in Shanghai turned over to David Flores, the first of two consecutive Lunar New Year takeovers Curative brought to the district. It set the template the following year would repeat.

The work

A five-meter Tomodachi, the French Bulldog character David Flores named after his own dog, anchored the main courtyard of the district. A mall-wide program carried his world through Xin Tian Di in flags, vinyl wraps, hanging elements, and billboards, and a merchandise pop-up near the entrance turned the character into a capsule: a collectible Tomodachi figure and a run of themed goods.

What Curative did

The same as the year that followed: Curative secured the opportunity and produced it across two continents. The contracts and settlements between a Los Angeles artist, an American production company, and a Chinese property group. Coordinating manufacturing with local vendors for the sculpture and the graphics throughout the mall. Arranging travel so the artist and team were on the ground for the unveiling.
